SarahKate has over 10 years experience in applying henna and photographing the women she paints. Most of her training has been “on the job” which starts with listening, then interpreting each subject’s ideas and lastly actually creating their ideas, on their skin, while they watch. In much the same way, she developed her photography technique, with looking at lots of art, things that she loves, and incorporating them into her style.
SarahKate has spent more than 10 years developing her unique and feminine style of art. She’s achieved the acknowledgement and recommendations from many satisfied women (and a few men) over the years,
SarahKate’s artwork has been to many births and is often recognized by hospital staff throughout the Denver and Boulder area.
What sets SarahKate apart from other artists is her decade long passion to create art honoring women through our rites of passage like pregnancy, babies and family. She is working on a body art and pregnancy project involving over 600 women, which has been a beautiful experience for everyone involved. SarahKate has an innate ability to listen to women, as a friendly ear but also understanding what they want from their design. She has earned the trust of hundred’s of area women though painting and that is something she honors above all else-creating a safe space for women to receive and express themselves.
Prenatal henna is the most meaningful art for SarahKate to create and she has hundreds of design ideas and photos of what’s possible. She has also spent a lot of time over the past decade collecting a gorgeous silky wardrobe for women to dress in so that she can create unique photographs of the process. Adorning women right in her home studio, allows them to use her professionally lit photo studio. SarahKate and her husband work together to take the outdoor photos. Henna is temporary, but these photos capture the moment and make it permanent. SarahKate loves creating photo books for her clients.
Working with henna clients is a collaboration from the start. Each subject’s creative mind often begins the session. The most important thing to her is that each mama she works with is comforatable, and that the art she creates reflects their vision. Her favorite thing about her work is to enjoying the company of expecting mothers–she loves to feel the baby kick her artwork as she’s painting–She enjoys seeing the smile and hearing mamas exclaim about their henna the first time they see it in the mirror. The joy of a pregnant mama is a beautiful thing to create and share.
SarahKate loves the song Every Day, by Carly Comando, and is currently learning it on the piano–her favorite hobby–and she loves how deep music takes her, expressing emotions without words. SarahKate also loves belly dance and other forms of dance that cross into yoga, contact and ecstatic dance.
SarahKate also enjoys reading non-fiction and she is especially interested in reading women’s biographies. Favorites are Anne Geddes, Joni Mitchell, Grandma Moses and Lynda Barry.
